U.S. President Joe Biden has authorized the supply of unmanned anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, a move aimed at helping slow Russia’s advances in eastern Ukraine. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed this decision to Reuters on November 20.
The approval of unmanned mines is seen as a strategic step to aid Ukraine in reducing Russia’s territorial gains, particularly when used alongside other weapons supplied by the United States.
The U.S. has stated that these mines will be used by Ukraine as traps on its own territory, ensuring that they will not be deployed in densely populated civilian areas. This was first reported by The Washington Post.
According to the official, the U.S. previously supplied Ukraine with anti-tank mines, but this new approval focuses on unmanned mines designed to counter Russia’s ground forces.
The U.S. official also emphasized that these mines are significantly different from those used by Russia, as they are “non-static” and deactivate after a preset time. The mines require a battery to explode, and once the battery is depleted, they will no longer detonate.
