Lara Trump Declines Consideration for Rubio’s Senate Seat Amid Speculation
Lara Trump, former co-chair of the Republican National Committee and daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, announced Saturday that she is withdrawing her name from consideration for the U.S. Senate seat that may soon be vacated by Marco Rubio. Rubio has been tapped by the president-elect as his pick for secretary of state.
“After much thought, contemplation, and encouragement from many, I’ve decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” Lara Trump shared in a post on X. She hinted at future plans, saying, “I have a big announcement to share in January. Stay tuned. I remain deeply passionate about public service and look forward to serving our country again in the future.”
Lara Trump’s announcement comes after weeks of speculation that she could be appointed to Rubio’s seat by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Earlier this month, her resignation as RNC co-chair fueled rumors about a potential Senate appointment.
However, President-elect Donald Trump appeared to temper expectations regarding her appointment. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he said he did not anticipate DeSantis naming Lara Trump to the position, emphasizing that it was entirely the governor’s decision. “Ron is doing a good job,” Trump stated. “That’s his choice, nothing to do with me.”
Sources revealed that DeSantis, while respectful of Lara Trump, expressed concerns about the optics of appointing her to such a high-profile role. Despite quiet lobbying efforts from high-profile MAGA Republicans, including Elon Musk, the governor signaled his intent to look elsewhere for a replacement.
With Lara Trump stepping back, attention now turns to other potential candidates for the seat as DeSantis weighs his decision.
