Republicans Hail Elon Musk as “Our Prime Minister” Amid Government Funding Showdown
Republican lawmakers are rallying behind Elon Musk following his prominent role in last week’s government funding standoff, with one congressman even referring to the tech billionaire as “our prime minister.”
Musk’s Influence Grows
Musk has become a powerful force in Washington, leveraging his influence to pressure lawmakers. His threats to fund primary challenges against those who defy him are reshaping political calculations, particularly among Republicans eager to align with his vision.
Democrats, however, are raising alarms. They accuse Musk of undermining a bipartisan government funding agreement spearheaded by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).
- Musk also hinted at bankrolling challenges to moderate Democrats in traditionally safe districts, further escalating tensions.
Praise from Republicans
Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) told CBS’s Face the Nation that Musk’s involvement in political discussions is undeniable. “It’s kind of interesting. We have a president, a vice president, and a speaker, but it feels like Elon Musk is our prime minister,” Gonzales said, adding that he and many other Republicans spoke with Musk multiple times during the funding negotiations.
On Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) admitted his earlier suggestion to elect Musk as House speaker was “tongue-in-cheek,” but he commended Musk’s insights.
Meanwhile, Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) defended Musk’s actions on CNN’s State of the Union, saying, “Thank god Elon Musk bought Twitter, because that’s the only way we would even know what’s in this bill.” Hagerty dismissed claims that Musk is influencing Trump, emphasizing that the former president remains the Republican Party’s leader.
Democratic Concerns
Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and other Democrats are questioning Musk’s motivations. Speaking on State of the Union, Coons expressed concern over changes to the funding bill that eliminated restrictions on outbound investment to China—changes he said could directly benefit Tesla, which operates a major factory in Shanghai.
“This raises serious questions about whether Musk’s role is advancing public interests or his own business agenda,” Coons noted.
The Bigger Picture
Elon Musk’s expanding influence in politics is fueling both admiration and unease. As the debate intensifies, his role in shaping America’s legislative landscape is likely to remain a hot-button issue in the months ahead.
