What to Know About Jimmy Carter’s Funeral
A series of ceremonies and services will take place in Washington, D.C., and Georgia to honor former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. The 39th president, known for his dedication to public service, will be remembered through a state funeral and other tributes before his burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, alongside his late wife, Rosalynn.

Key Details About the Funeral
Where Will the Funeral Be Held?
The state funeral will take place on January 9 at the Washington National Cathedral. Prior to the service, Carter’s body will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, beginning the afternoon of January 7. The public will have designated times to pay their respects at the Capitol.
To honor his memory, President Joe Biden has declared January 9 a national day of mourning and ordered the closure of the federal government that day.
Additional Ceremonies
Carter’s tributes will extend beyond Washington:
- On January 4, a motorcade will pass through Plains, Georgia, visiting Carter’s childhood home before proceeding to Atlanta for a public service at the Carter Presidential Center.
- On January 5 and January 6, Carter’s remains will be on display at the Carter Presidential Library.
- Following the state funeral, Carter will be laid to rest in Plains during a private ceremony.
Who Will Attend the State Funeral?
President Joe Biden, whom Carter personally requested to deliver the eulogy in 2023, will lead the ceremony.
Former presidents and first ladies are expected to attend, including Barack and Michelle Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton, and First Lady Jill Biden.
It remains uncertain whether former President Donald Trump will attend. While he was absent from Rosalynn Carter’s funeral in 2022, his wife, Melania Trump, represented the family. Trump did attend the state funeral for George H.W. Bush in 2018.
Honoring a Legacy
Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, passed away after spending two years in hospice care. His contributions to education, energy policy, human rights, and peacebuilding remain celebrated.
