Five individuals have been arrested in Brazil on charges of plotting to assassinate the country’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Among those arrested are four military personnel and one police officer.
The suspects are believed to have planned the assassination before Lula da Silva’s inauguration as President in 2022. The British news outlet BBC reported the development on Tuesday, November 19.
According to the report, Brazilian police detained the suspects over allegations that they conspired to kill President-elect Lula da Silva and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, just two weeks before their inauguration on December 15, 2022. Local media confirmed that the arrested individuals include four soldiers and a police officer.
The BBC stated that the conspiracy allegedly involved plans to assassinate Lula and Alckmin prior to Lula’s swearing-in ceremony.
It is worth noting that Lula da Silva was elected as Brazil’s President in October 2022, narrowly defeating the incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro, however, never publicly conceded his defeat.
